The 23rd NAVIGATOR 2024 – The Shipping Decision Makers Forum concluded successfully in the beautiful Chios and Oinousses Islands! Decarbonisation, ESG, Human Element, AI, Geopolitics and Regulation were discussed among a group of professionals and owners in the Greek shipping community !
Pinelopi Kassani participated in the Decarbonisation and ESG panel along with
Dimitris Anassis,
John Tsogas,
Stelios Katsanis,
Miltos Messinezis,
Evi Kokkofiti,
Alkistis Kyriakopoulou. Pinelopi presented an overview of where
#ESG reporting in maritime stands at the moment, highlighting that there is variety in the reporting landscape, with most listed companies reporting mainly under both SASB and GRI. She also noted that while the majority of listed maritime companies prepare sustainability or ESG reports, the appetite for external assurance is still low.
The discussion opened up with participants commenting on how, despite good intentions, ESG reports are often faced with criticism on their relevance and reliability. Addressing a question by Dr
George Pateras on how ESG reporting can be made more meaningful through collaboration, Pinelopi said that private shipping companies can start with what they monitor anyway on E, S and G and have their first attempts on ESG reporting by utilizing industry-specific frameworks, such as SASB for Maritime Transport. With the auspices of institutional players, like the Hellenic Chamber of Shipping (https://lnkd.in/d5r7G889) who recently issued ESG Guidelines for shipping, owners can collectively push for more concise, but also meaningful, complete and in-accordance with international standards, ESG reporting, ensuring of course they have their financiers and other stakeholders on board. This will in turn help shift perceptions towards a higher acceptance and recognition of the value in ESG Reporting.
We would like to thank
